Human Trafficking Workshop

The Barbados National Task Force for the Prevention of Human Trafficking (TFTIP), in collaboration with the International Organisation of Migration, will host a workshop entitled: Awareness Session for Media and NGOs at Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael, on Friday, October 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The workshop is part of a regional project designed to build the capacity of Barbados, St. Lucia and the Bahamas to counter trafficking in persons, through training and other technical skills and is funded in part by the US State Department.

It targets professionals in the media and aims to increase participants??? understanding of the basic concepts of human trafficking and equip them with the knowledge of how to disseminate information without endangering victims or investigations.

Part of the TFTIP???s mission is to provide knowledge to various sectors in Barbados, in an effort to prevent the incidence of trafficking in persons and to provide care and support for victims.

This is but one of a series of workshops being held on human trafficking. Others will target officers from the Immigration Department, members of the medical profession and other health care providers.

Constituency Councils To Help Common Entrance Students

The Christ Church West Central and the Christ Church West Constituency Councils will be conducting homework/lessons development programmes for students preparing for the 2014 Common Entrance Examination.

The programme being hosted by the Christ Church West Central Constituency Council will begin on Saturday, October 19, at the Vauxhall Primary School from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The classes will run each Saturday leading up the exams in May, next year.

It aims to identify and assist Class Three and Four pupils in strengthening their academic abilities, and to develop the reading abilities of students in Classes One and Two.

Interested parents or guardians can still register their children for this programme by contacting Chetwyn Rice at 238-7129.

Meanwhile, the classes being held by the Christ Church West Constituency Council will commence on Saturday, October 26, at the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each Saturday. The deadline for submission of names is Wednesday, October 23.

The objective of this programme is to assist parents in the constituency who are unable to afford extra tuition to help their children prepare for the Common Entrance Examination. Pupils will be tutored in Mathematics and Language Arts, with special focus on Comprehension and Composition.
