Panel Discussion on Employment Rights October 27

The Employment Rights Act will come under the microscope this weekend when the Ministry of Labour hosts a panel discussion on the recently proclaimed legislation.

Entitled E.R.A – A New Era in Employment Rights, the discussion will be held on Sunday, October 27, at the Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church, Ellerton, St. George, starting at 6:00 p.m.

The panellists will be Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development, Senator Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo and Human Resource Specialist, Peter Earle. All are invited.

The Employment Rights Act was proclaimed on April 15, 2013.

Stats Month Celebrations Continue On November 1 & 8

The Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) will continue its celebration of Stats Month with a Health Expo for the public on Friday, November 1.

It will be held at the BSS, Fifth Floor, Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael, beginning at 9:00 a.m. During the day, there will be blood pressure and diabetes checks, along with product sampling.

Meanwhile, members of the public and secondary school children will have an opportunity to learn more about the work of the BSS, when an Open Day is held there on Friday, November 8, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There will be short presentations and displays showcasing output from the four divisions within the Department, namely, Business Surveys, Censuses and Surveys, Socioeconomic Statistics as well as Trade and National Accounts.

UWI Open Campus Lecture on Food & Agriculture

Food and Agriculture are Vital for the Sustainable Growth of Caribbean Economies will be the next topic to be discussed in this month???s the University in the Community Lunchtime Lecture series.

Hosted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus in collaboration with the Central Bank of Barbados, the lecture will be delivered by Dr. Chelston Brathwaite ??? Consultant in Food Security, UWI Cave Hill Campus and Director Emeritus of the Inter-American Institute.

It takes place in the Grande Salle of the Central Bank at noon, on Thursday, October 31.

Members of the public are invited to attend.

Town Hall Meeting on Prison Study Next Month

Members of the public are invited to air their views on the Environmental and Social Impact Study to facilitate the development of a prison farm at Dodds Plantation, St. Philip, on Wednesday, November 6, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Church Hall of the St. Philip Parish Church, Church Village, St. Philip. All are invited.

Post Graduate Scholarships Now Being Offered

Barbadians who are interested in pursuing post graduate studies in Science and Engineering now have an opportunity to apply for scholarships in those areas, but they must do so by Friday, October 25.

The Division of Economic Affairs has advised that applications for scholarships are being offered by the National Science and Technology Council of Mexico (CONACYT) through the Embassy of Mexico.

CONACYT is offering up to 500 post graduate scholarships in Science and Engineering for citizens of OAS member states. The programmes will be taught in Spanish and, therefore, applicants must be fluent in that language.

Edu-Nation Discussion for Students – October 23

The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will hold its annual Edu-Nation discussion this Wednesday, October 23, at the Queen???s Park Steel Shed from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The event, which forms part of the activities for Education Month, is targetted at fifth and sixth formers, as well as students who attend tertiary level institutions.

It will be held under the theme: Science, Technology and Innovation: Today???s Classroom – Tomorrow???s Citizen.

Senior Technical Officer at the National Council on Science and Technology, Arlene Weekes, will be the Moderator. Panellists will include Dr. Colin Depradine of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of the West Indies; Dr. Pearson Broome, E:Governance; Physics Teacher at Combermere School, Tyrone King and Chief Innovator, Innogen Technologies Inc., Mark St. Hill also of the Barbados Manufacturers Association.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry, Senator Harry Husbands and Deputy Chief Education Officer, Dr. Patricia Saul will deliver addresses prior to the start of the discussion.
