Alzheimer???s Workshops For Caregivers

The Barbados Alzheimer???s Association is inviting caregivers of persons with alzheimer???s or dementia to take part in three workshops on Coping Strategies on Monday, November 18; Monday, November 25; and Monday, December 2, from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. each day.

The workshops which will take place at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Black Rock, St. Michael, will involve medical and social care professionals and promote inventive caring methods while debunking myths surrounding the disease. Participants will benefit from explanations of behaviours and motivation intended to help to relieve some of the stresses experienced by those affected by alzheimer’s.

President of the Association, Pamelia Brereton, said that caring for people with alzheimer’s could be confusing and challenging, especially during the busy holiday period, ???when people with [the disease] can be sidelined???.

She noted: ???The workshops will show that breaking the myths and adopting creative ways and means of care – as well as informed tolerance – can help to ease the load.???

Registration begins on Monday, November 4, at the Association???s office located at Black Rock Main Road, St. Michael, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It closes on Friday, November 15. Interested persons may also contact the office at 438-7111.
