Workshop on International Liability for Pollution Damage

Barbados will join 14 Caribbean countries to discuss issues relating to liability and compensation due to environmental pollution during a workshop on International Liability and Compensatory Regimes for Pollution Damage.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment and Drainage, Edison Alleyne, will deliver the address during the opening of the workshop on Tuesday, October 24, at the Accra Beach Resort, Rockley, Christ Church, beginning at 9:00 a.m. It is being staged by the Environmental Protection Department, in cooperation with the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Information and Training Centre for the Wider Caribbean.

The training workshop is designed to provide insight into matters of liability and compensation in the event environmental pollution occurs as a result of an oil spill. It will appraise participants on the impacts of oil pollution on marine and coastal resources with a view to assessing the role of stakeholders in pollution response.

In addition, it is also expected to instruct participants on claims admissibility criteria for property damage and economic loss that may be incurred by the fisheries, mariculture and tourism sectors.The conference concludes on Thursday, September 26.

Maritime Week 2013

The maritime sector???s contribution to the island???s development will come into sharp focus next week when celebrations for Maritime Week begin on Sunday.

Under the theme: Sustainable Maritime Development, the activities will get under way from Sunday, September 22, with a thanksgiving service at the St. Patrick???s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael, starting at 11:00 a.m. Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, will deliver brief remarks during the service.

On World Maritime Day, Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27, Captain Dennis Griffith, will mount a display of maritime memorabilia at the Prince Hall Masonic Centre, Graeme Hall, Christ Church, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., each day.

Staff in the Ministry will benefit from a range of activities relating to their maritime and professional development during a Staff Education Day at the Ministry of International Transport???s Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael, headquarters.

Grannies Have Say on HIV and Sex at Combermere School Hall

Take Warning: Grannies Say on HIV and Sex is the title of a dramatic production being held at the Combermere School Hall, Waterford, St. Michael, over the next week.

The play, which is being sponsored by the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, in association with the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP), may be viewed on Sunday, September 22, Friday, September 27, and Saturday, September 28. It will begin at 7:00 p.m. each night.

Additionally, there will be performances by Junior Calypso Monarch Quinn P and former monarch Jazz-Z, and a special performance by Kayla B. All are invited to attend.

Grantley Adams PTA Meeting Tomorrow

Parents and guardians of students attending the Grantley Adams Memorial School are invited to a Parent Teachers??? Association meeting, tomorrow, Saturday, September 21.
