Schools in Barbados will commemorate African Awareness Month with activities, over the next few weeks. A highlight of most schools will be the wearing of African garb and displaying of artifacts and various foods.

This year, the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation has advised that teachers include activities to celebrate the life and work of Nelson Mandela, former President of South and leaders of the African National Congress.

Activities may include, but are not limited to, listening to stories or discussing photographs, videos or movies.

The George Lamming Primary School at Flint Hall, will start their celebrations on Monday February 3, at 9:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony.

The theme chosen by the school is Mandela: African Icon. The featured speaker will be Monsignor Vincent Blackett of the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael.
