This island’s senior citizens will be celebrated when the Geriatric Hospital stages a number of events in their honour from Sunday, September 26, until Saturday, October 2.????????????????

The week will begin with a church service on Sunday, September 26 at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Bay Street, St. Michael, starting at 8:30 a.m.?? Activities will then move to the Geriatric Hospital, Beckles Road, St. Michael where a movie day will be held for residents on Monday September, 27, starting at 2:00 p.m. Then on Tuesday September, 28 karaoke will be held, at that institution from 2:00 p.m.

The public is invited to visit the hospital on Wednesday, September, 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for its Open Day.?? According to Acting Principal Nursing Officer, Brenda King, members of the Alzheimer’s Association will man a booth to give information about the brain disorder.?? Also, as part of the ???GENLINK’ (generational linkage) programme, aimed at bridging the gap between the elderly and the youth, staff and students of Erdiston School will visit the hospital wards and present patients with a hamper.

Activities will kick into high gear on Thursday, September 30, when patients from the Geriatric Hospital, other District Hospitals and the Psychiatric Hospital don costumes made from materials donated by Abed’s and Company Ltd. and some band leaders, to take part in a "Kadooment".?? The parade will leave the Geriatric Hospital at 10:00 a.m. and move to the YMPC grounds, Beckles Road, where bands will be judged as patients enjoy a day of fun and music.

On Friday October 1, patients and staff of the hospital will journey to the King George V Memorial Park for a picnic starting at 9:00 a.m.?? The activities will culminate on Saturday, October 2, with a concert staged by the Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. for staff and patients of the hospital.

"We are providing holistic care and, therefore, want to stimulate the patients spiritually, psycho-socially, mentally and physically.?? We also want to encourage the public to get involved as we seek to more fully integrate the community with the hospital," the acting Principal Nursing Officer said. lbayley@barbados.gov.bb
