The limelight will fall on this island’s elderly next week, when the Geriatric Hospital hosts a number of activities as part of Senior Citizens’ Month.

On Sunday, September 23, the week will be launched with a church service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Bay Street, St. Michael, beginning at 8:00 a.m.?? Minister of Health, Donville Inniss, and Hospital Manager, Joanelle Oxley Worrell, will address the congregation.??

Then, on Monday, September 24, the hospital will stage an outdoor games day at its Beckles Road headquarters from 10:00 a.m. for patients and their families.?? Visitors to the hospital may also take part in games such as dominoes, word search, puzzles, lime and spoon and walking races.

On the following day, Tuesday, September 25, patients will be treated to lunchtime entertainment by the Barbados Light & Power’s Ready Panners, and performances in song, drama and poetry by some of the hospital’s nurses.?? An open day will be staged on Wednesday, September 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including exhibitions of craft done by patients.?? Some service organisations, including the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and the Barbados Fire Service have also been invited to set up booths to share information on that day.

The highly-anticipated Mini Kadooment will be held on the grounds of the Hospital on Thursday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. after which, around noon, several calypsonians including Lorenzo, Popsicle and Hypasounds will serenade the patients.?? The week will culminate on Friday, September 28, when staff and a number of wards from various district hospitals will attend a picnic at Bath in St. John, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The public is invited to take part in these and other activities to mark Senior Citizens’ Month.
