Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe

Policies to refine and finalise action plans and prioritise strategies for implementing how chemicals are handled in Barbados will take centre stage during a workshop hosted by the Environmental Protection Department from Monday, November 12 to Tuesday, November 13.

Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, will address the opening ceremony of the workshop at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, on the role of Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in Barbados at 9:00 a.m.

Representatives from Government, industry, transport, agriculture, academia, non-governmental organisations and consumers are expected to attend the workshop to discuss and refine the draft strategy for implementation. The workshop is being held under the theme: Implementing GHS in Barbados.

The strategy will outline activities and agencies responsible for events, timeframes and resources necessary for the implementation of the system on the island.

GHS is an approach to defining health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals. It also seeks to create classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria and communicate hazard information and protective measures on labels and safety data sheets.
