Girls attending The St Michael School (SMS) will be able to enjoy enhanced bathroom facilities when the 2018-2019 school year starts.  The refurbishment work at the institution was funded by the SMS Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

President of the association, Faye Wharton-Parris, explained that the ongoing project had so far cost approximately $20,000. “Monies were raised over a two-year period through PTA fees and various fundraising activities organised by the PTA,” she stated.

She explained that the refurbishment of the bathroom included repainting the bathroom walls; replacing eight high-level water cisterns; placing privacy locks on toilet doors; retiling shower stalls; and repairing several cracks in the walls.

“We are pleased to have reached this stage in the project as this demonstrates that the collaboration between parents and the school is extremely beneficial to our children.  It is important that parents continue to support the efforts of PTAs since we are really helping ourselves and the wider public,” Mrs. Wharton-Parris stressed.

She added that extensive work was still required to level the bathroom floor and embed drains. Furthermore, there are plans to install hand dryers instead and the school is considering installing new soap and commercial toilet paper dispensers.

The PTA president extended “heartfelt thanks” to parents; the principal and staff of the school; Do It Best for donating some of the paint and everyone who assisted with the project.  She also urged students to care for the new facilities while appealing to parents, past-students and other interest groups to support the ongoing work, whether in cash or in kind.
