Minister of Family, Youth, Sports and Environment, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo

World Bank officials have been assured of the Government of Barbados’ support and commitment to the second HIV/AIDS Project.

This reassurance came today from Minister of Family, Youth, Sports and Environment, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, during talks with Senior Health Specialist (Human Development) with the World Bank, Dr. Joana Godinho.

Minister Byer Suckoo said she was looking forward to the project, promising that she would do what she could to ensure that it went well and received good ratings.

She stated that since the completion of the first GOB/World Bank Project, officials realised there was a need for an improvement in some areas and that would be done to ensure the success of the second project.

Dr. Godinho said surveillance of the project was critical, and there was a need to focus on prevention, especially in high risk groups.

During the discussions, they also looked at several other issues, including stigma and Behaviour Change Communication.

Government recently signed the US $35 million loan which will assist with the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control 2008-2013 and the approved Behavioural Change Strategy. The loan will co-finance the Government’s National AIDS Programme and it is a subset of the project, the total cost of which is US $94.4 million.
