Government continues to spend over $3 million annually on the disabled community.

This was revealed by Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steve Blackett, earlier today, as he addressed a prize-giving ceremony at United Nations House, for the Barbados Council for the Disabled Secondary Schools’ Literary Competition.

In stressing Government’s commitment to creating a more supportive environment for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the Social Care Minister stated that through the National Disabilities Unit, funds are allocated to develop programmes which will "bring about a greater level of integration of Persons with Disabilities into mainstream society."

He highlighted the Information Technology Project for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons as one of the initiatives the Ministry had implemented, which would allow that sector to effectively participate in the new information society.

"It will raise their prospects for employment and increase their earning capacity. This project is, therefore, central to government’s efforts to mainstream, empower, integrate or re-integrate persons who are, or have become blind/visually impaired," the Minister asserted.

He also mentioned the National Disabilities Unit’s Flower Project which provides training in flower arranging, and "will provide gainful employment for them and become an avenue of self help."??sharifa.medford@barbados.gov.bb
