The long-standing work of the European Union (EU) in providing developmental assistance to Barbados and the region has come in for high praise from Acting Prime Minister, Richard Sealy.

He praised the Union’s work yesterday during a farewell call by the EU’s Head of Delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Ambassador Valeriano Diaz, in the Committee Room at Parliament.

Mr. Sealy said: "The EU deserves a lot of credit…I think the shift away from traditional aid to the more developmental focus is better for us [the Caribbean] because it shows a genuine partnership.??

The EU is a genuine partnership that has worked very well for the region and we [government] like that to see that cooperation grow from strength to strength."

Ambassador Diaz described his tour of duty, which began in 2008, as "an interesting experience" and pledged the Union’s continued assistance in other areas such as climate change.

"So, we are very happy with the relationship with the government.?? I think that the relationship has improved a lot and based on this premise, we can only be happy," he added.

Ambassador Diaz leaves the island on Saturday.
