Members of the public are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with Government House, the official home of this island’s Governor General, when the Barbados National Trust hosts an Open House on Wednesday, March 13.

Viewing will take place from 2:30 until 5:30 p.m. and those interested in touring the House must purchase tickets in advance from the Trust, Wildey Great House, St. Michael. On the day of the Open House, persons should buy tickets from a tent outside Belmont Funeral Home, Belmont, St. Michael. For more information the public should call 426-2421.

The house, which is now Government House, was first leased by the island’s legislature because "in 1698 Governor Grey flatly refused to live in the low-lying Holborn, by the sea at Fontabelle". The property was eventually bought for the country in 1736 for 1350 pounds.????

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has been working with the Trust to sensitise the public and visitors to the island about Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, as well as places of significant historic value.
