The Ministry of Education has invested $400,000 towards the construction of a sports pavilion at the Queen’s College School, Husbands, St. James.

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, told those gathered at the launch of the Barbados Gold Buyers "Shine" Fundraising Concert, at the East Restaurant, Prospect, St. James, today, that the school was without a pavilion for 20 years and now was the time to rectify the situation.

"QC as one of our outstanding schools; is a school that continues to work, continues to function and continues to be well led. And, therefore, all of us must come to the assistance of Queen’s College. The history of Queen’s College is a very proud one; it goes back over 130 years.

He lamented that after 20 years the pavilion has not been completed and said that it was for this reason his Ministry came to the assistance.

The pavilion will cost $1.2 million to construct. So far, the QC Give Back Committee, which is organising the concert featuring headliner Cover Drive, has managed to raise $100,000 through its fundraising initiatives. This brings the total funds raised to $500,000.

The Education Minister said children deserved the best, particularly in the area of sports and culture. He noted that within the context of school, a healthy mind and a healthy body produced the best results and that was why the construction of the pavilion was important.

Mr. Jones added that over the last several years Queen’s College had proven itself a force to be reckoned with, rivalling many in cricket; track and field, football and in other areas. In addition, he pointed out, that students continued to perform very well academically.

"I am going to urge all persons not only here but in wider Barbados to truly show your caring spirit, your commitment, your regard for the efforts of Give Back QC, for the efforts of all people involved, and to support our young people because it is for them that this is being done," the Minister said.
