Minister of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe??

With thousands of gallons of water from the island’s springs being lost on a daily basis, Government is moving with alacrity to get the legal framework in place to harness the water from these sources to add to the island’s water network.

Word of this has come from Minister of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, who said Government is currently contemplating the amendment of the Porey Springs legislation, as part of its overall water resources management programme.

The Minister was at the time, providing an update on plans for improvements in the island’s water resources management.

"We are currently contemplating the amendment of the Porey Springs (St. Thomas) legislation that will give Government access to that water. It does not have access right now because of the legislation which dates back to 1860. The same is true with the Three Houses Springs (St. Philip). Those areas produce thousands of gallons of water per day, this has to go into our water network, and we are going to make amendments to the legislation to accommodate that," he explained.

With the Barbados Water Authority charged with the task of drafting the requisite amendment legislation, Minister Lowe indicated following this, the necessary steps would be taken to take the matter first to Cabinet and then to?? Parliament.

"I anticipate that we would be getting that legislation on the floor of Parliament within the next month or two.?? It is urgent. There is a growing fear in Barbados that we are becoming so water scarce that we may have to purchase water, but I do not share that view. I think we just have to manage our water resources better and we have to ensure that we stay on top of technology to help us advance the process," he maintained. cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
