Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson

Government has promised to revamp its marketing strategies in order to tap into the lucrative sports tourism market which brings scores of motor enthusiasts to the island.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson, gave this undertaking last Saturday during the opening ceremony of the Barbados Motor Show.  The event, held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, was put on by Premier Event Services Inc. in conjunction with Barbados Motoring News.

In keeping with Government’s pledge to develop strong links between tourism and sports, the Minister said that Government was heartened by the large number of local and overseas spectators who followed motoring events held at the Bushy Park, St Philip racing circuit and the SOL Rally Barbados earlier this year.

“I am told that there is an increasing number of persons from outside Barbados who visit primarily to participate in motor sport events. This, of course, will generate an increasing amount of tourism dollars. So, I want to encourage the organisers to take advantage of these trends to grow this exhibition through greater Caribbean and international participation,” Mr. Hutson added.

Despite the economic benefits derived from motoring, he raised concern, however, about the environmental impact on the society from noise pollution, traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

Mr. Hutson reminded the Barbadian public that the Barbados National Standards Institution has developed a standard for vehicle emissions.
