“Government is well on its way to achieving the goals set out in the National Strategic Plan, especially in the area related to poverty eradication.” That is the view of Advisor to the Prime Minister on Poverty Eradication and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Hamilton Lashley.

He was speaking today after receiving a sponsorship cheque from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) totaling $60,000.00, to assist with the ongoing home repair and rebuilding programme, “Carrying out the Promise”.

“I am happy RBC has come on board to help us with this initiative. Poverty eradication is goal number one of the eight MDGs which my office has a mandate to achieve,” Mr. Lashley said.

The funds handed over today will go towards rebuilding a house for Anita Brathwaite of Fordes Road, Clapham, St. Michael.  Vice President, RBC, Barbados, Rey Royer, said the bank was delighted to be partnering with Mr. Lashley’s office in its quest to eradicate poverty.

“Our involvement with this project will not only be from a corporate level. I am very proud to say that many members of our staff have expressed a personal interest in the project and want to assist throughout its various stages. The RBC Social and Service Club members have also volunteered their time and skills to this project,” he said.

Mr. Lashley, in welcoming RBCs kind gesture noted that “such partnerships are necessary, because government cannot achieve this first millennium development goal alone. I welcome such partnerships and will continue to encourage more corporate entities to help Barbados achieve all eight MDGs”.
