The greenhouse at Harrison College. (FP)

A greenhouse, originally opened in 2009, at Harrison College (HC), is set to be revived next week.

The official ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 7, at 8:45 a.m. in the area between the First Form Block and the Greenhouse at the Crumpton Street, St. Michael institution.

Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney, is expected to attend and deliver brief remarks. Members of the management team, senior prefects, Old Harrisonians, and members of the Environmental Club will also be in attendance.

Principal of HC, Juanita Wade, noting the greenhouse is the first of its kind at any school across the island, said while agriculture is not, at the moment, a big feature of her school’s curriculum, she anticipates it will be soon.

“We are looking at introducing aquaculture and hydroponics.  We are hoping children will have the opportunity to understand the benefits of good food choices and the importance of food security and food sustainability and being able to feed ourselves as an institution and as a country,” said Ms. Wade.

Adding that it fits well into Government’s push to have healthier habits within schools, she noted the reconstruction of the greenhouse comes thanks to “hard work” by laboratory technician Jeffrey Brancker and gardener Andre Nurse, as well as corporate Barbados.
