The much talked about tunnels at George Washington House will move a step closer to readiness for public access, when Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, breaks ground for a new stage of work at that site on Friday, June 6, at 9:30 a.m.

The Garrison Tunnel Project is coordinated by the Garrison Consortium, the Bush Hill Tourism Trust and the Tourism Development Corporation.

The complex network of tunnels spans the entire Garrison area, reaching as far as the Barbados Museum and Historical Society.

Their origin and purpose continue to be debated by town planners and historians, with records indicating that some were used as passageways for storm water. However, based on ???local stories??? handed down through generations, the tunnels were used as escape routes and secret passageways.

It is expected that the opening of the tunnels will enhance the historical significance of the Garrison Complex as a UNESCO World Heritage Property.
