The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday received a cheque for US$40,000 from Guardian Life of the Caribbean to assist with the purchase of personal protective equipment and other supplies being used in the COVID-19 response.

The cheque was handed over to deputy chair of the QEH’S Board of Management, Dr. Abdul Mohamed, by Guardian Life’s Manager of Administration, Barbados, Linette Mapp, at a ceremony at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Frank Walcott Building, Culloden Road, St. Michael.

Mrs. Mapp explained that, in response to the impact of COVID-19 in the region, Guardian Life of the Caribbean had accelerated its support throughout the Caribbean to vulnerable families, charitable organizations, hospitals and healthcare professionals.

She particularly commended the efforts of the healthcare workers in the face of the pandemic, and said the company was pleased to contribute to the goal of flattening the curve in Barbados.

In saluting the Ministry of Health and Wellness and all the healthcare professionals in Barbados, she, however, warned the population against complacency, since the fight was not over.

Dr. Mohamed, in response, said that the impact of the pandemic on the QEH had resulted in significant costs, and donations such as the one made by Guardian Life were invaluable in helping the healthcare institution to meet the challenges.

He expressed the hospital’s gratitude for the financial donation, and said that the role philanthropy has played in assisting the institution has been heart-warming.
