Guatemalan investment in this island???s cultural industries sector would be appreciated, says Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley.
He made this point to Guatemala???s Ambassador to Barbados, Giovanni Rene Castillo Polanco, during a recent courtesy call at his Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall office.
Expressing the view that this sector was one ???that more propelled it in the eyes of investors???, Mr. Lashley said: ???Certainly, we are looking at building our cultural sector, the whole idea of festivals and sharing of expertise is something to consider. Our cultural artistes are looking for other markets and we are looking for markets so they can export their work.???
While alluding to Barbados??? World Heritage status, the Minister said the two countries could work collaboratively with respect to heritage sites. He noted there were a number of areas to be restored here and said the island was seeking to ???make sure our sites maintained their World Heritage status???.
The Culture Minister also urged that consideration be given to ???a tripartite engagement??? with Venezuela that would lead to collaboration and discussion on strategies related to such sites.
Ambassador Castillo, in agreeing with the Minister noted that investment in culture would be a ???good start??? in continuing the relations started since January 27, 1992.
???I think that would be an excellent way for interaction. Culture is the first channel; it is really the gateway. I will take these ideas with me and develop them further,??? said Mr. Castillo, adding that his country was trying to work closer with the Caribbean in the areas of tourism, commerce, politics and culture.
Guatemala is currently accredited to Barbados through its embassy in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
