A new "state-of-the-art" electronic scoreboard will be installed at the Wildey Gymnasium by the end of July, this year.

This disclosure was made today during a meeting with Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, Chinese Ambassador, Wei Quiang, a team of technicians from China and officials of the Gymnasium.

Minister Lashley expressed gratitude for the scoreboard, which will be provided by the Government of China and noted that its advanced technology and capabilities, "should also allow the Gymnasium to explore new revenue earning opportunities in the key areas of marketing and advertising."

A project undertaken by the Chinese Government, and handed over to the Government of Barbados in 1992, the Gymnasium was deemed as an important initiative by Ambassador Wei. He commended the upkeep of the establishment and said he was pleased to see it was being used "effectively and for multiple purposes."

Minister Lashley, who is also responsible for Culture, Family and Youth, was also optimistic that additional projects would be undertaken between Barbados and China.

"There has already been a formal offer to provide Barbados with a modern theatre.?? Together with the Ministry of Housing and Lands, my Ministry is in the process of exploring possible locations for this theatre, as we are very much in need of performing arts spaces as we continue to develop the cultural industries in Barbados," he said.

Barbados and China established diplomatic ties in 1977.
