Winner of the first prize in the junior division of the FCCA Children’s Poster Competition, Daniel Lashley.??????

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the local winners of the 2010 Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Foundation Children’s Poster Competition.

Harrison College has topped the junior leg of the contest, while for the second consecutive year; The Alexandra School has placed first in the senior division.

According to Tourism Development Officer with responsibility for education and awareness in the Ministry of Tourism, Marsha Armstrong, the competition received some 65 entries from 13 primary and secondary schools across Barbados.??

Noting that the Ministry was extremely pleased with the number of entries this year, Ms. Armstrong said: "The competition seeks to promote and stimulate environmental awareness among Caribbean students, while effectively educating our younger generation on the importance of environmental protection."

She added: "Through these competitions young Barbadians were given the opportunity to express their thoughts or views through creativity, on ways in which we can safeguard our tourism industry."

The junior category of the FCCA?? Poster Competition targeted students 12 years and under, while the senior category was opened to students ages 13 to 16. The top three local winners in the junior division are: 1st place – 11-year old Daniel Lashley of Harrison College, whose poster was entitled: "Our environment, Our responsibility"; 2nd place – nine-year old Nicholas Haywood of St. Winifred’s School and 3rd place saw a tie between 10-year old Mikayla Lucas of Charles F. Broome Primary and nine-year old Jodi DaSilva of St. Winifred’s School.

The top three local winners in the senior division are: 1st place 15-year old Anisah Woods of The Alexandra School with a poster entitled "Preserving the Nation’s future"; 2nd place 15-year old Zicala Thomas of The Alexandra School and 3rd place 13-year old Dominique Webb of the Lodge School.

The posters, which are now on display in the Conference Room of the Ministry of Tourism, have been receiving positive comments from a number of tourism stakeholders.

For the students’ efforts and participation, the Ministry will be organising a small presentation ceremony for winners at the local level, including tours on cruise ships, during the month of April.

Each year, the FCCA invites primary and secondary school students in its partner destinations to participate in the Children’s Environmental Poster Competition. Students are asked to submit one poster depicting at least three ways in which his/her destination can make a difference in preserving the environment.

The top winning posters in each category were sent to the FCCA headquarters in Florida for the second round of the judging. At this stage, the top three overall Caribbean winners in each category of the contest will be selected.
