The Caves of Barbados (Harrison’s Cave) has captured its first Service Sector Medium award.

The popular tourist attraction received the award through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Employers Recognition programme on February 29 from Minister of Labour, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo.

Chief Executive Officer of the Cave, Joe-Ann Grant, said the Welchman Hall, facility became eligible for the award through training conducted with the TVET Council.

Ms. Grant explained that the TVET Employers Recognition award was a national competition which acknowledged and celebrated employers who invested in workforce training. She added that it placed an emphasis on the training and development of workers by communicating the benefits to be gained from such training, and involved both public and private sector employees in the process.

She further noted that a training plan for the Cave was created in 2006 to address the gaps in the skills and competencies of staff. She said that the company’s training philosophy was to ensure that all members of staff of the Cave were equipped with knowledge and skills necessary to provide the level of service and visitor experience that the organisation expected to offer.

As a result, the company’s management sought to achieve this by undertaking training with a variety of organisations including the TVET Council. "We believe that the key to training and developing employees is to realise that employees want to be valuable to the company that they work in and they also want to ensure that their skills are competitive in their industry," Ms. Grant indicated.

The awards are held to increase the amount and quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training currently provided by employers in Barbados.
