In observance of Love Safely Week, February 13 -17, the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will host a healthy lifestyles day on Tuesday February 14, under the theme A Healthy Touch.

The event will be held in the quadrangle at the Ministry’s headquarters, located at the Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St. Michael from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

A key purpose of the Health Day is to expose staff of the Ministry to healthy alternatives by equipping them with the information and knowledge necessary to achieve this. It also aims to offer staff the opportunity to be tested for HIV and AIDS and to engage staff in exercises that would lead to healthier and more productive lifestyles.

Participants will be able to take advantage of the various tests to be undertaken by officials from the Ministry of Health and the Diabetes Association of Barbados.?? These include blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, body mass index and HIV tests. In addition, there will be VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing).

Other activities will include care of the feet, alternative medicine, body massage, a light exercise workout and various speeches on the importance of living healthy lifestyles.?? There will also be a three-minute speech competition for staff.

Literature will also be distributed from the Barbados Diabetes Association, Barbados Cancer Society, Barbados Family Planning Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Participants in the health day will be given tokens of appreciation, while those in the speech competition will be awarded prizes.

The Health Day is expected to be the start of a larger programme which aims to encourage staff of the Ministry to make healthy living an integral part of their lives. The Ministry also hopes that certain activities would be continued for 100 consecutive days after the Health Day on February 14.?? These include weekly exercise routines, line dancing and healthy eating.
