A health extravaganza has been planned for the district of Lower Burney, to address the issue of the Giant African Snail in that community.

The Environmental Health Department of the Winston Scott Polyclinic, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, will host the Health Fair, next Saturday, July 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The aim of the event is to increase public awareness about the impact of the heavy population of snails.

It will take place at the Corner of Citrus and Neem Avenue at Lower Burney, St. Michael and is part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s efforts to reduce the onslaught of the snails that are plaguing the community.

Patrons will therefore be provided with snail and rodent bait, to facilitate this exercise.

As children frolic in the jumping tents and enjoy nutritious foods and drinks, adults will get the opportunity to check their blood sugar and glucose levels, while acquiring basic health screening.??

There will also be informational booths set up along the grounds to educate persons about matters of environmental health and methods of reducing the snail population.

The Environmental Health Department of the Winston Scott Polyclinic and the Ministry of Agriculture anticipate that through the reduction of the Giant African Snail, the rodent and mosquito populations would also be curtailed, since snails double as food for rodents, while harbouring mosquitoes when water collects in their shells.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the health extravaganza.
