The Government of Barbados, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), will host a four-day hemispheric conference next week on the Rapid and Widespread Ratification and Effective Implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006.
It will be held from September 7 to 10 at the Hilton Barbados and 73 persons from 27 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Dominica and Antigua, are expected to attend.
The purpose of the meeting is to deepen the participants’ understanding of the Maritime Labour Convention, and, in light of existing laws and practices of countries in the region, assist them in identifying legislative gaps and seek solutions which would make it possible for them to ratify and implement the Convention.
The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, was adopted by the ILO at its 94th (Maritime) Session in Switzerland. To date, it has been ratified by the Bahamas, Liberia, the Marshall Islands, Norway and Panama.
