June is Heritage Month, and it will be the time to focus on Barbados??? colourful and rich heritage and to celebrate the inscription of Barbados??? first UNESCO World Heritage Property, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.

Under the theme, ???Celebrating and Preserving Our Heritage??? this year???s Heritage Month will be launched on Saturday, May 30, at 3:00 p.m. in Golden Square, The City. Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, will deliver the feature address at the launch.

To highlight the economic potential of heritage, there will be various displays of heritage related art, craft and services, as well as exhibitions by a number of local entrepreneurs.

Among the exhibitors will be Youth Partners of the Commission for Pan African Affairs, the Women Entrepreneurs of Barbados (WEB) and clients of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation.

There will also be opportunities for persons to enrol in some of the Ministry???s programmes targeting youth, in particular the Youth Mainstreaming Programme (provides training for at risk youth in media arts), Youth Achieving Results (which trains at risk youth in performing arts), and the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme.

In addition to the exhibitions, there will be tours of the Golden Square area, conducted by historians. These tours will provide residents and business owners with glimpses into the rich cultural heritage of the area, including the personalities and businesses surrounding Golden Square.

The evening will also feature cultural performances by community groups, music by a tuk band, displays of art and craft, and the screening of films produced by young filmmakers. The public is encouraged to attend the launch on Saturday, May 30.
