Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison. (FP)

June is Heritage Month in Barbados, and, this year, it also commemorates the eighth anniversary of the inscription of ‘Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison’ as a World Heritage Property.

Coordinator for Heritage Month activities, Sheron Johnson, explained that the primary objectives of the month are “to promote awareness of heritage in all forms and its link to national identity, sensitize the public about the rich heritage assets within the inscribed property, promote awareness of the potential social and economic benefits of cultural heritage to national development and promote the use of heritage as a tool to create new products and services, in keeping with the Ministry’s mandate for the Creative Economy.”

To this end, Ms. Johnson explained that the St Michael Parish Independence Committee would host a Town Hall Meeting at the St Paul’s Anglican Church, Bay Street, St. Michael, this Saturday, June 15, at 4:00 p.m.

Along with Ms. Johnson, the panelists include Dr Tara Inniss; Kevin Farmer of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society; and Terry Vanderpool Fox of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

The discussion will centre around the topic: St. Michael’s Heritage: Its Economic and Social Benefits for Local Communities.
