Members of the public will soon be able to step back in time and take a journey along the path that led to freedom for Barbadians when the Barbados Museum and Historical Society conducts a series of pilot tours.

"Freedom Footprints: The Barbados Story" Heritage Tours will begin on Saturday, January 8, and continue on Thursday, January 20, Saturday, February 5, Thursday, February 17, Saturday, March 5 and Thursday, March 17; at the Barbados Museum, the Garrison, St. Michael, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day.

Visitors will start with a tour of slavery-related galleries at the Museum and then they will be taken to a number of locations across the island that have been identified with the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the slavery experience. These are "The Cage", the site of a holding cell for runaway slaves and others who "misbehaved" and Newton Slave Burial Ground, which is the only excavated communal slave interment place in a plantation setting in the western hemisphere.

They will also visit Bourne’s Land, a free village established in 1831; Sweet Bottom, the oldest non-white village on the island and Gun Hill Signal Station, which was constructed primarily to relay information on impending slave revolts.

Persons who are interested in participating in these exciting heritage tours should contact the Barbados Museum at telephone number 427-0201 to receive information on tickets and other details.

The Ministry of Tourism has contracted the Museum to carry out the pilot tours, which have a similar concept to the African Diaspora Heritage Trails, already in operation in various countries.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
