The Earl and Countess of Wessex will mark celebrations of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee with an official visit to Barbados from February 23 to 24.

Over the years, members of the Royal Family have come to Barbados, with the most recent visit being Princess Anne, the Princess Royal in June 2011 for the Caribbean-Canada Emerging Leaders Dialogue.

Britain’s Prince Harry, along with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, paid a three-day official visit here in January 2010 to raise funds for the Sentebale Charitable Trust.

In 1989, Her Majesty the Queen visited Barbados to mark celebrations for the 350th anniversary of Barbados’ Parliament. She previously came to the island at the end of her Silver Jubilee tour in 1977. It was on this occasion that she knighted National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers before hundreds of adoring supporters at the Garrison Savannah.

This year’s two-day visit by the Earl and Countess of Wessex forms part of celebrations to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee and will see Members of the Royal Family travelling to a number of Commonwealth countries.

Other events planned to mark the Diamond Jubilee will include the Lighting of a Beacon at the historic Garrison later this year.
