Over 150 delegates are expected on the island next month when the Caribbean Association of Home Economists Inc. (CAHE) brings its 20th biennial conference to these shores.

The four day conference officially opens on Sunday, April 7, at the Sir Roy Marshall Teaching Complex, University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, St. Michael, at 4:30 p.m.

Staged in celebration of CAHE’s 41st anniversary, it will be held under the theme: Home Economics Empowerment: Education for Sustainable Lifestyles. It also forms part of that association’s programme for professional development of its members while providing opportunities for social and professional networking as well as the social and economic growth of the territories in which they are held.????????????????????????????????

A non-governmental organisation with members from the Anglophone Caribbean from Guyana to Belize and parts of North America, CAHE is largely made up of teachers and allied professionals. It is affiliated to the International Federation for Home Economics an organisation that is over one hundred years.

A key issue to be examined will be the role of Home Economics in the fight against Chronic Non-communicable Diseases (CNCDs), which will be addressed by Dr. Donald Simeon, Deputy Executive Director and Director of Research, Caribbean Public Health Research Council, (CARPHA), Trinidad and Tobago.

Other topics include: Home Economics Empowerment: Ending Poverty and Hunger; Sustainable Food Production to Boost Food Security; The Role of Research in Food and Nutrition; Home Economics Education and Agriculture; Home Economics Education and Entrepreneurship Agriculture.

There will also be a panel discussion on Home Economics Education: Issues of Gender and Decent Work and a plenary session on the Certification Model for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Qualifications for the Caribbean Single Market?? and Economy, (CSME).

The biennial conference will also see the launch of a Water Day to sensitise Caribbean people about the need to reduce their intake of carbonated beverages, while there will be a general meeting on Monday, April 8, to elect a new CAHE executive leadership team.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones is expected to deliver the feature address while President of CAHE, Audrey Jones-Drayton will bring remarks on behalf of that organisation.
