Ways in which the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat can assist the island in observing basic human rights were among the areas discussed, when head of that Unit, Karen McKenzie, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Maxine McClean.

During the meeting at the Ministry’s Culloden Road, St. Michael offices, the two officials exchanged robust ideas on the issue and the way forward.

The Foreign Affairs Minister added that Barbados, as well as other Commonwealth Caribbean countries, were committed to protecting human rights and the rights of all citizens.

In this regard, Ms. McKenzie expressed the hope of establishing a long-term working relationship with the region.

The Commonwealth Human Rights Unit was established to develop promotional assistance programmes to support Commonwealth members’ stated human rights commitments.
