A number of Government officials will soon receive greater insight into human trafficking, in an effort to help them recognise and fight this menace which is said to be affecting some Caribbean countries.

A two-day workshop will be held from next Tuesday, September 28, at the Hilton Barbados on "Strengthening Capacity of Law Enforcement and others to Identify and Combat Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children".

It is being sponsored by the Organization of American States (OAS), in collaboration with the Bureau of Gender Affairs. Police officers, judges, magistrates, lawyers, immigration officers and prosecutors are expected to be trained in the prevention, prosecution, identification and protection of victims of trafficking in persons.

Some of the topics to be discussed are: The Distinctions between Trafficking and Smuggling, The Human Rights Dimension, Combating Human Trafficking in Barbados, Child Trafficking, Victim Identification, Assistance and Protection, and Ethical Interviewing of Trafficked Victims.

During the training, the OAS is expected to formally present material it has put together on the fight against trafficking in persons and share vital information with participants. saustin@barbados.gov.bb
