The importance of preparing for hurricanes, even during the Crop-Over period, will be highlighted tomorrow, Saturday, June 22, during a free Hurricane Preparedness Moonlight Movie Night at the Weymouth Police Sports Complex, Roebuck Street, St. Michael, from 7:00 p.m.
Eight calypsonians, including Peter Ram, Stiffy, Hypasounds, Frost and Fuhnominon, will take to the stage to perform during the movie night, which features the film Hurricane Season. It is based on the true story of John Ehret High School’s 2005-2006 state championship team.
The film highlights a country struck by Hurricane Katrina, how the people rallied together during the storm, and again during the rebuilding process. It also shows how basketball coach, Al Collins played by Forest Whitaker, assembles a team of players who previously attended five different schools before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, and led them on the path of winning the state championship.
During the event, officials from the Department of Emergency Management will be on hand to provide information and advice to the public on hurricane preparedness do’s and don’ts.
All are invited to attend the movie night, and are encouraged to walk with blankets and chairs.
The event is aimed at raising preparedness levels, and keeping the messages of hurricane preparedness in the forefront of people’s minds during the Crop-Over season. It is also aimed at promoting individual responsibility and the importance of each household having its own hurricane preparedness plan.
The Hurricane Preparedness Moonlight Movie Night is being hosted by the Public Awareness and Education subcommittee of the Preparedness, Readiness and Resilience Working Group of the Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards.
