This coming Sunday, May 25, Government will be taking the first step towards fulfilling its promise to give Barbadians a say in community initiatives that will of necessity impact on their daily lives, when it hosts the inaugural town hall meeting on Constituency Councils.

It comes off at the Lodge School, Massiah Street, St. John, at 4:45 p.m. and it will be addressed by Prime Minister David Thompson and Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Urban Development, Dr. Denis Lowe.

Members of the public are encouraged to come out and contribute to the development of Government’s plan “to bring about good governance in the further development of the country”.

In the Throne Speech earlier this year, it was outlined that Constituency Councils would be established to execute community enhancement and development projects.  They would comprise representatives of the church, civil society and the political administration, inter alia, and would seek to address “the perennial problems of street lighting, sporting and recreational facilities, drainage, poverty alleviation and youth programmes.”

It is expected that Barbados will get technical and financial assistance from bilateral sources such as the People’s Republic of China in providing the physical framework for the operation of the Councils, and the proposed Constituency Empowerment Centres. This will assist in the enhancement of our capability in delivering certain social public services across a variety of areas including health, culture, education and community development.

After Sunday’s initial meeting, the next town hall gathering will be at The St. Michael School on Wednesday, May 28, at 7:00 p.m.
