The battle for this year’s Community Indepen-Dance Festival title will intensify early next month when the Zone Finals take place at several venues across the island.

The festival, which is being held under the theme, “Unleashing the Spirit of the Community”, seeks to, among other things, foster community spirit, re-establish the community as a creative space, and provide an avenue through which communities can showcase their talents during the island’s annual independence celebrations.

Some 22 dance groups are participating in this year’s Zone Finals, with 10 places “up for grabs” in the final on Saturday, December 6, 2008.

The shows kicks off with the Eastern Zone on Thursday, November 6 at the Lester Vaughn School, Cane Garden, St. Thomas; the Northern Zone on Friday, November 7, at the Coleridge and Parry School, Ashton Hall, St. Peter; the Southern on Saturday, November 8, at the Foundation School, church Hill, Christ Church; St. Michael North on Sunday, November 9, at Combermere, Waterford and St. Michael South on Monday, November 10, at the Barbados Community College, Howells Cross Road. All shows begin at 7:00 p.m. and are free to the public.

The Indepen-DANCE Festival, which is in its third year, is coordinated by the Community Development Department in collaboration with the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat, the National Cultural Foundation and the Commission for Pan-African Affairs.
