Barbadians will next week have an opportunity to learn more about the island’s coastlines; biodiversity and local culture, as well as compete for attractive prizes – all?? while utilising their cellular phones!

This comes as Government’s Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), in collaboration with Go- click Technology, stages an Independence Challenge Game called ???CZMU Coastline Challenge’.??????????

According to CZMU’s Director, Dr. Leo Brewster, the game, which was started on a trial basis last year, will be played on November 29 and 30 and will be available via web-active cell phones, as well as the CZMU’s website at http://www.coastal.gov.bb/.

??"It is unique [and] innovative and has worked very well.?? People get to learn quite a bit.?? It is supposed to heighten environmental awareness, local and cultural awareness, as well as provide information on tourism and biodiversity in Barbados. People who played last year said they truly enjoyed it," Dr. Brewster explained.

??"The idea is to get people in tune with using various applications on cell phones. It will comprise a series of multiple choice questions which makes them eligible to win various prizes," he added.

In terms of the procedure, Dr. Brewster said full instructions on the start-up would be available via advertisements in Barbados Today, the island’s sole full-fledged on-line newspaper next Monday, as well as in the Barbados Advocate on Tuesday, Independence Day. He noted, however, that the initial procedure would entail the downloading of free software.

In terms of logistics, the CZMU head pointed out that the cell numbers of winners would be automatically logged into the system, and the game-makers would subsequently, notify CZMU of these numbers. The Department would then contact the winners, who would be asked to come to the CZMU to draw for their respective prizes.

Dr. Brewster indicated that the names of winners should be available by the end of next week.??????

Sponsors of the event include Dover Beach Hotel; Divi Southwinds Beach Resort; Coconut Court Beach Hotel; Digicel Barbados Ltd.; Sunisle Technology Solutions and Baird Associates.

Grand prizes, as well as small give-aways would be presented to various winners.??cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
