The Index of Industrial Production for the month of August 2011 was 78.8. This indicates that the output level decreased by 5.0 points or 6.0 per cent compared with July 2011 and rose by 1.2 points or 1.5 per cent when compared with August 2010. The Manufacturing division, which is the main component of the Production Index, decreased by 7.2 points or 10.7 per cent compared with the previous month and advanced by 2.4 points or 4.2 per cent compared with August 2010. Of the other two components of the Index of Industrial Production, the Mining and Quarrying Division rose by 17.8 points or 22.8 per cent compared with July 2011 and decreased by 24.9 points or 20.6 per cent when compared with August 2010 while the Electricity, Gas and Water division rose by 1.6 points or 1.0 per cent above that of the previous month.

Within the Manufacturing division, increases were recorded for the Food division by 6.5 points or 7.5 per cent; and Other Manufacturing by 10.6 points or 13.0 per cent when compared with the previous month.

Further, there were decreases recorded for the Beverages and Tobacco division by 47.8 points or 44.0 per cent; Wearing Apparel by 6.8 points or 32.3 per cent; Wooden Furniture by 8.4 points or 11.0 per cent; Chemicals by 12.6 points or 15.7 per cent; Non-Metallic Mineral Products by 62.3 points or 23.8 per cent; and Electronic Components by 4.7 points or 24.1 per cent when compared with July 2011.

Within the mining sub-division, crude oil rose by 14.2 points or 23.6 per cent compared with the previous month and advanced by 5.4 points or 7.8 per cent compared with August 2010. The Quarrying sub-division decreased by 20.3 points or 22.3 per cent compared with that of the previous month.

Within the Electricity, Gas and Water division, increases were recorded for Electricity by 2.2 points or 1.2 per cent and Natural Gas by 2.6 points or 7.0 per cent, while there was a decrease for Water by 0.3 of a point or 0.2 per cent below that of the previous month.
