The Index of Industrial Production for the month of August 2013 was 73.2.

This indicated that the output levels decreased by 2.8 points or 3.6 per cent compared with the previous month and declined by 3.0 points or 4.0 per cent when compared with August 2012.

The Manufacturing division, which is the main component of the Production Index, decreased by 2.1 points or 3.7 per cent compared with July and decreased by 3.5 points or 6.0 per cent compared with August 2012.

The Mining and Quarrying Division decreased by 16.5 points or 21.5 per cent compared with July 2013 and declined by 14.7 points or 19.6 per cent when compared with August 2012.

The Electricity, Gas and Water Division fell by 3.7 points or 2.3 per cent below that of the previous month.

Manufacturing Index

The group movements within this division are detailed as follows:

Food

The Food division for August 2013 increased by 4.9 points or 5.8 per cent over that of July 2013 and declined by 5.9 points or 6.2 per cent in comparison to August 2012.

Beverages and Tobacco

The combined Index fell by 24.8 points or 31.0 per cent compared to the previous month and declined by 19.4 points or 26.0 per cent compared to August 2012.

The Beverages Index decreased by 34.6 points or 30.9 per cent when compared with the previous month and fell by 27.1 points or 26.0 per cent below that of August 2012.

The output for Tobacco fell 0.2 of a point or 47.8 per cent compared with the previous month and showed no change in comparison with August 2012.

Wearing Apparel

This division increased slightly by 0.1 of a point or 1.2 per cent above that of the previous month, and declined by 7.6 points or 45.6 per cent below the previous year.

Wooden Furniture

This division decreased by 3.2 points or 35.6 per cent below July 2013 and declined by 8.4 points or 58.8 per cent over August 2012.

Chemicals

The combined index for this division decreased by 3.4 points or 3.7 per cent in comparison to the previous month and fell by 2.6 points or 2.9 per cent below August 2012.

The Industrial Chemical index fell by 41.8 points or 20.0 per cent below July 2013, and the Other Chemicals index rose by 12.0 points or 28.2 per cent over the previous month.

Non-Metallic Products

Output for this group increased by 31.5 points or 16.6 per cent compared to July 2013 and increased by 41.1 points or 22.9 per cent compared to August 2012.

Electronic Components

The index for this group advanced by 3.7 points or 39.7 per cent over the previous month and rose by 2.9 points or 28.4 per cent over the previous year.

Other Manufacturing

This index decreased by 0.6 of a point or 0.9 per cent below the previous month and decreased by 4.9 points or 6.9 per cent below the previous year.

Mining and Quarrying

Within the mining sub-division, crude oil fell by 11.1 points or 15.8 per cent compared with the previous month and increased by 1.7 points or 2.9 per cent compared with August 2012.

The Quarrying sub-division fell by 20.5 points or 25.1 per cent compared with that of the previous month.

Electricity, Gas and Water

Within the Electricity, Gas and Water division, the net generation of electricity decreased by 4.5 points or 2.5 per cent below the previous month.

Natural Gas increased by 0.9 of a point or 2.3 per cent over July 2013; net -generation of water declined by 2.0 points or 1.6 per cent over the previous month.
