The Government and people of India are working diligently to make this year’s Commonwealth Games a success.

This assurance came from India’s High Commissioner to Suriname, Kanwal Jit Singh Sodhi, who is based in Trinidad and oversees some Caribbean countries, including Barbados.

Mr. Sodhi made the comments yesterday while meeting with Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, at her Constitution Road, St. Michael, office. The games will be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14.

Dr. Byer Suckoo said Barbados was preparing to send athletes to the games, including its senior netball team. She told the Ambassador the island always tried to send representatives in the areas of track and field and swimming, noting that the latter sport was doing very well here.

The envoy pointed out that his country was very proud of its relationship with Barbados and expressed confidence that relations would continue to improve in the future. He added that India felt very close to the Caribbean and stressed that he was keen to see business people from India investing in this region.

During the talks, the officials discussed several areas, including the arrival of the Queen’s Baton in Barbados later this month as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay for Delhi 2010, which is one of the great traditions of the Commonwealth Games. They also spoke about the upcoming Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting and cooperation in various sports programmes.
