Following a recent spate of fires, the Ministry of Industry, Small Business and Rural Development, and stakeholders in the manufacturing sector, have conducted an industrial fire review.

This was disclosed by Minister Denis Kellman, while delivering remarks at a ceremony for the certification of Crown Packaging Barbados as a World Class Environmental Health and Safety Partner, on Wednesday.

Mr. Kellman pointed out that there were three major fires within the last four years, one of which was at Grazettes’ Industrial Park, resulting in the loss of 400 jobs.

"This situation has caused the Ministry, along with the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association, to give priority to health and safety issues at industrial sites," he explained.

Alluding to the review, he noted that: "Among the objectives of the overall project are the development of a comprehensive safety and standards system for the manufacturing sector and the promotion of good safety and hazard mitigation practices among manufacturers."

Minister Kellman lauded Crown Packaging’s efforts to prevent such problems through the implementation of proper health and safety practices. "…You must not only be commended but supported…I am not at all surprised at your achievement. The cleanliness exhibited and the safety measures employed show the level of seriousness devoted to the task," he underlined.

Crown Packaging Barbados, a subsidiary of Crown Holdings Inc., is the third company in the Crown group to receive the World Class certification.
