Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, interacts with children enrolled in Camp Enterprise at Queen’s College.

Business campers have been told that in today’s economic crisis, the emphasis must be on innovation.

This message was given by Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, while addressing yesterday’s opening of Camp Enterprise, a business camp for 80-odd children between the ages of 13 and 17, at Queen’s College.

Dr. Byer Suckoo said new areas and markets must be tapped into and that was the reason for the creation of the Ministry of Innovation.

"It is through new ideas that we can develop new businesses, tap into new markets and bring in additional funds because we cannot continue to seek those traditional markets which we have been seeking over the past decade.

"Young people are not bound by tradition and they don’t see the world the way we do. You are very innovative in your thoughts and practices as you blaze new trails and venture into unchartered waters… There is an economic crisis and we have to try to do new things and…we really need to get young people on board," Dr. Byer Suckoo stated.

The Minister said the children would be involved in fun, wholesome activities which would contribute to their total development. She urged them to take advantage of the opportunity to express their creativity and to dream big.

The specialised four-week camp has been designed to help young people explore entrepreneurship, while empowering them to manage their own businesses and chart new paths in the creation of enterprises.
