As part of a continuing initiative to strengthen capacity, the Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Health and the Geriatric Hospital will be conducting a training seminar from Monday, May 3 to Thursday, May 6.

As part of a continuing initiative to strengthen capacity, the Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Health and the Geriatric Hospital will be conducting a training seminar from Monday, May 3 to Thursday, May 6.

Minister of Health, Donville Inniss, will deliver the feature address, while Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Joy St. John will make remarks during the opening ceremony which gets under way at 9:00 a.m.

The workshop, which will be held at Environmental Health Training Centre, Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael, has been designed for persons in the nursing, dietary, porter, laundry?? and housekeeping departments of governmental geriatric long term care facilities. The 18 hour course, "Introduction to Institutional Hygiene for Long Term Care Facilities" will consist of nine, two hour modules.??

The seminar will include a number of topics, including indoor air quality, solid waste management, cleaning, disinfecting and maintenance, infection control and occupational health and safety.??

The Institutional Hygiene training programme is just one in a series of training programmes initiated by the Environmental Health Department and the Barbados Community College. Others courses include: Basic Food safety Training and Introduction to Vector Control; Introduction to Swimming Pool Operations and Animal Care and Welfare. Persons interested in any of these courses are asked to contact the Environmental Health Training Centre at 271-4799.
