The Integrated Summer Camp, which is hosted by the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the National Disabilities Unit (NDU), is expected to have more campers this year.
The camp will be held at the Sharon Primary School, Sharon, St. Thomas and the Ann Hill School, The Pine, St. Michael, from Monday, July 9 to Friday, August 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., daily.
Acting Director of the NDU, Lloyd Springer, said that they were aiming to attract 100 campers at both camp sites, with an equal number of children with disabilities and children without disabilities.
"This is also part of the awareness programme so that children who do not have disabilities would be better able to relate to children who have disabilities, while children with disabilities can enhance their self-esteem," Mr. Springer explained.
Noting that the programme began in 2000 under the NDU’s wing before being taken over by the Division of Family and Youth, the Acting Director added: "The programming is similar to previous years but this year we expect to have a number of tours, and sign language will be featured prominently… We have proven this in the past to be very beneficial to both sets of children. And, at the same time, the parents will be able to get some respite."
He further urged parents to return registration forms to the schools by tomorrow, Thursday, June 28, and encouraged other interested persons to collect forms from the NDU’s office, National Union of Public Workers’ headquarters, Dalkeith, St. Michael.
