Tomorrow, secondary school students will get an opportunity to learn about beach safety, and career opportunities in the maritime sector. It will take the form of interactive career showcase which will be staged on Wednesday, September 26 at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, the City, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, will deliver remarks during the opening of the showcase and present the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Maritime Studies to a student of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP).
The showcase is being held as part of the World Maritime Week celebrations which runs from September 23 to 28 under the theme: 100 Years after the Titanic – Safety of Life at Sea.
During the event, there will be presentations from the lifeguards about beach safety for sea bathers, safety tips from the Barbados Coast Guard (BCG), and facts about safety on board vessels by Shipping Superintendent in the Ministry of International Business and International Transport, Walter Best.
Students will also be able to listen to presentations on career opportunities on board ships by officials from various cruise lines, and also view a video clip of the movie The Titanic.
Exhibitors will include the SJPP, BCG, the Barbados Port Inc., the National Conservation Commission, the Royal Barbados Police Force’s Marine Unit, The Centre for Resource management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), the Coastal Zone Management Unit, and the Ministries of Labour and the Environment and Drainage.
