Airlift between Barbados the region received a boost yesterday with the arrival of interCaribbean’s inaugural flight from Guyana.
Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Lisa Cummins has described the introduction of this flight as an important step in strengthening inter-regional travel.
“… this has been an important flight for us to make sure that we have airlift capacity again to Guyana, it’s no secret that there has been a loss of airlift in the region; and so these partnerships are to ensure that inter-regional travel can again be supported which will really be critical to our development,” said the Minister.
“In fact, there were many passengers that came up on the flight from Guyana who are making connections here in Barbados on international carriers and that very much is part of why we do what we do, because Barbados is very much a hub for travel internationally, ” she added.
The International Transport Minister noted that interCaribbean which operates out of Turks and Caicos Islands, has established a southern hub in Barbados at the Grantley Adams International Airport, where the airline will be servicing over 13 destinations from Barbados.
Senator Cummins expressed pleasure that the country was to partner with interCaribbean and highlighted “long, strong, familiar relationship” between Barbados and Guyana.
Acting Consul General for the Republic of Guyana to Barbados, Geneva Ross- Tyndall who was also on hand to welcome the flight from Guyana said “I think it is a really great initiative and only works to strengthen the relationship between Guyana and Barbados, and I look forward to strengthening collaborations between our people”.
The airline which started operating services from Grenada, St. Lucia and Dominica to Barbados back in August 2020, will now add 12 weekly flights between Guyana and Barbados.
interCaribbean Airways was established over 29 years ago by Founder and Chairman, Mr. Lyndon Gardiner. The airline operates ERJ145 50-seat Jets and EMB120 30-seat Turbo aircraft.
