Barbados will join other CARICOM countries in observing The International Year of Statistics – a day designed to bring more prominence to the importance of statistics in social and economic planning.

The day, which will be commemorated on March 6, is designed to increase public awareness about the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society; nurture statistics as a profession especially among young people; and promote creativity and development in the sciences of probability and statistics.

A number of activities have been planned in the various territories to promote public awareness including forums, quizzes and project competitions and publication launches.

In Barbados, the Barbados Statistical Service will be posting a message on its website highlighting the significance of the day as well as releasing some of the preliminary results from its 2010 Population and Housing Census.

It is hoped that from this exercise, the public as well as policy makers would be reenergised to work together to promote the importance of statistics in every day planning.
