The internet will come into sharp focus next week when the 2nd Barbados Internet Governance Forum is convened.

Over 150 persons are expected to attend the forum, which will be held from Thursday, July 19, to Friday, July 20, at the Cave Hill School of Business, under the theme: We Want to Hear From You! It will be hosted by the Internet Society Barbados Chapter and the Government of Barbados.

The forum will provide Barbadians from all sectors of society with a platform to discuss how they use the internet and any pertinent issues affecting them. In addition, citizens will be educated about the various processes they can become involved in so as to increase their knowledge and make valuable contributions to the internet’s evolution.

A number of persons from the region will make presentations during the two days. In addition, a representative from the Government of Estonia will participate in a high-level discussion on Digital Barbados.

Other topics to be discussed are: Child Online Protection, Online Harassment, Cybersecurity, Social Media, Privacy, Fake News, Disaster Recovery and Network Resilience, The Internet as a Platform for Economic Growth, Block Chain, Digital Identity and Online Payments.

One of its key outputs will be the compilation of a comprehensive report detailing the critical internet governance issues affecting business, government, civic organisations and the public.

The Internet Governance Forum is a United Nations global initiative, designed to promote discussion and consensus on public policy issues relating to the internet.

It is an outcome of the United Nations-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society in 2005, and its 10-year mandate was renewed in 2015. More details and registration information can be found at www.igf.bb.
