"Invest in yourself and learn a skill", that is the advice coming from the Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB), as that organisation invites Barbadians to enrol in courses offered under its Evening Programme.

With over 20 technical and vocational skills training classes available, Senior Clerk of the BVTB, Jennifer Walker, pointed out that "persons participating could reap personal and eventually financial benefits for an extremely reasonable price."

Noting that the cost of the courses ranged from $150 to $325, Ms. Walker underscored that most participants used the skills they learnt to "either make money or save money".

Explaining that this was the case with courses such as Tiling and Decorative Finishes, Cake and Pastry Making, International Cooking, Dress Making and Auto-Mechanics, the BVTB’s officer outlined that there were numerous reasons why participants pursued technical and vocational skills training.????

"Some people do the courses to upgrade or expand their skills, to become more marketable or to use their newly acquired skills to earn extra cash.?? Others would use the skills they learnt at home to help save money in areas like construction or vehicle maintenance," she said, describing either case as "a win-win situation".

Learning a technical or vocational skill such as Nail Technology, Event Planning and Management, Plumbing or Cupboard Construction could be used by an individual to combat unemployment, spur entrepreneurial initiatives and increase his or her income.

Ms. Walker emphasised that the Evening Programme was open to the general public; however, she stressed that many employed persons were "delighted that the classes are offered after work at 5:30 p.m. and for one day a week".23s

Courses will start on January 30 and will run for 12 weeks.?? They will be held across the island at the following BVTB Training Centres: Sayes Court, Christ Church; All Saints, St. Peter and St. Luke’s St. George.

Fees must be paid in full, and any undersubscribed classes would be cancelled.

Ms. Walker encouraged interested persons to sign up for courses under the Evening Programme online at http://www.bvtb.gov.bb/ or contact the BVTB by telephone for further information at 621-2882 or 621-BVTB.??
